ICxA Certification Framework

ICxA Certification

Anyone can be certified to manage projects. ICxA certifies professionals to govern outcomes. That is what this framework recognizes.

ICxA certification recognises professionals who can lead commissioning, operational readiness, and outcome assurance with real project accountability. It is awarded through examination and verified experience.

The ICxA Certification Framework is designed to recognise professionals at different stages of responsibility and capability, from foundational understanding through to advanced leadership and authority in complex project environments.

What ICxA Certification Recognizes

ICxA certification recognises more than technical familiarity. It is intended to validate the capability to contribute to, lead, and govern successful outcomes across commissioning, operational readiness, and outcome governance.

Certification is designed for professionals who are accountable not only for project activity, but for readiness, integration, operational performance, and the quality of decisions that shape successful outcomes.

How Certification Works

ICxA certification follows a structured pathway designed to recognise both knowledge and demonstrated professional capability.

1. Become an active ICxA member
Certification candidates maintain active ICxA membership in order to participate in the professional framework, access the relevant pathway information, and remain in good standing.

2. Complete the required examination pathway
Candidates complete the required examinations for the certification level they are pursuing. Examinations are designed to assess understanding of the principles, frameworks, and professional judgement required for successful outcome governance.

3. Demonstrate relevant experience where applicable
For advanced certification levels, candidates may be required to provide evidence of relevant professional experience demonstrating increasing levels of responsibility, judgement, and leadership.

4. Maintain active standing
Certification remains connected to active professional standing within ICxA and is supported by continued membership and alignment with the Institute’s framework.

Certification Levels

ICxA certification is structured as a progressive framework so that professionals can be recognised at the level that reflects their current capability, responsibility, and experience.

Certification progression is not based on time served alone. It is based on demonstrated understanding, successful examination performance, and, where applicable, verified professional experience.

Who Certification is For

ICxA certification is intended for professionals working in or alongside:

  • commissioning
  • operational readiness
  • startup and systems integration
  • project governance and assurance
  • outcome-focused project leadership
  • owner, operator, and delivery-side readiness functions

It is particularly relevant for professionals whose work influences whether assets, systems, and organisations are truly ready to perform.

Training and Certification

Training and certification are related, but they are not the same.

Training supports learning and preparation. Certification recognises demonstrated capability through examination and verified experience.

ICxA may recognise aligned learning pathways and accredited training partners, but certification itself is awarded through the Institute’s certification framework and standards of professional recognition.

Membership and Certification

Membership gives professionals access to the ICxA professional ecosystem. Certification is the formal recognition of capability within that framework.

In practical terms:

  • membership connects you to the institute, its standards, and its pathways
  • certification recognises your demonstrated capability and standing

An active ICxA membership is required for participation in the certification framework and for maintaining professional standing.

Experience and Progression

ICxA certification is designed to recognise increasing levels of professional capability.

Early-stage levels may focus primarily on examination and foundational understanding. More advanced levels may require evidence of relevant experience, increasing scope of responsibility, and demonstrated ability to support or lead successful outcomes in complex project environments.

This ensures that certification reflects not only knowledge, but applied professional judgement.
