If you’ve ever searched for a commissioning standard for your projects, you’ve likely encountered a mix of information and found it confusing to discern which standards apply to which project types. In this presentation, I’ll walk you through the standards available and guide you on which ones are best suited for industrial plant process and energy system projects.
In this session, we’ll explore what makes the ICA Global Commissioning Standard truly remarkable and how it can save time and money on your projects. My name is Paul, and I work with project professionals in the industrial plant, process, and energy systems fields, helping them become global commissioning leaders who deliver projects on time and within budget. By applying the ICA Global Commissioning Standard, you can elevate your projects to meet these goals.
Understanding Industrial Commissioning
Industrial commissioning applies to projects involving:
- Power systems (e.g., high-voltage substations, power generation)
- Renewable energy systems
- Oil and gas systems (e.g., LNG plants)
- Process systems (e.g., water/wastewater treatment, hydrogen generation)
- Manufacturing facilities (e.g., mining or chemical production)
- Data centers (power and cooling systems)
- Rail and transport systems
Any project with mechanical, electrical, and automation systems requiring integration as one functional system benefits from industrial commissioning. For years, big companies have had to develop their own commissioning processes due to the lack of an industry standard. For example, National Grid’s TP141 is a stringent internal standard for electrical apparatus commissioning, though it’s only accessible to National Grid employees and designated partners.
Similarly, organizations like the Construction Industry Institute (CII) and American Petroleum Institute (API) provide commissioning guidelines, but they don’t cover every project stage in detail. Large corporations like Shell, BP, and Siemens have developed their own internal processes, but these documents aren’t publicly available. As a result, commissioning practices have historically been inconsistent and difficult to standardize across the industry.
Filling the Gap: The ICA Global Commissioning Standard
To address this gap, the ICA gathered commissioning experts from various industries to develop a comprehensive standard. The ICA Global Commissioning Standard was designed to provide a structured approach for complex industrial projects, consolidating the best practices from several decades of commissioning experience. This new standard makes it easier for project teams to implement world-class commissioning and reduce time and costs.
Our goal is simple: to help project teams follow a standard commissioning approach that promotes efficiency, reduces errors, and improves outcomes. This approach benefits both small and large projects, enabling organizations and individuals alike to become global commissioning leaders.
Why the ICA Standard is Essential
Without a standardized approach, guiding a team from the start to the successful completion of a project can be daunting. The ICA standard provides a clear path, reducing the risk of mistakes and ensuring everyone on the project has a unified understanding of commissioning goals.
Consider it like running a marathon: if you don’t know where the finish line is, you risk running in circles. With the ICA Global Commissioning Standard, you gain access to decades of lessons learned, making the commissioning process smoother, more predictable, and far more efficient.
